Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellows Program

Each Spring, 30 Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellows are selected from applications submitted by students in a diversity of fields, including but not limited to medicine, nursing, dentistry, public health, social work, psychology, pharmacy, physical therapy, law, nutrition, art therapy, dance/movement therapy, and acupuncture.

Program Elements and Requirements: Working in collaboration with an existing local community agency, each Fellow designs and implements a service project that addresses an unmet community health need. Fellowship projects include the following:

  • A minimum of 200 hours of service (including 130 hours conducting a community service project that is focused on direct, face-to-face contact with the population being served)
  • Guidance from mentors, including a Site Mentor at the hosting community agency, an Academic Mentor at the student’s academic institution, and Program mentors
  • Monthly progress reports on the Fellow’s project
  • A written report at the conclusion of the project, including recommendations for ways in which the most valuable aspects of the Fellow’s project and experiences can be replicated or sustained

Eligibility: Any student who will be enrolled at least part-time in a health-related, graduate-level-degree-granting program during the Fellowship year is welcome to apply. Please note that two exceptions to this are medical and podiatry students who will be entering their third year of medical school. Medical and podiatry students who will be in their first, second, or fourth year during the Fellowship year are eligible.

Deadline: The application deadline for the 2022-23 Fellowship year is February 1st, 2022. Finalists will be interviewed in mid-March, and the Fellows will be announced in early April.

LUC Public Health Sciences Dept.: Research Assistant Internship (Paid/Part-Time)

The Public Health Science Department is looking for an enthusiastic and organized Research Assistant I (RAI) to work on a community lifestyle program aimed to improve lifestyle and wellness of families in the Maywood area. The Family Lifestyle Program (FLiP) is grant funded by the Eisenberg Foundation and has been operating for 6 years at a Non-for profit Community based organization, Maywood Fine Arts. Through a collaboration with Nutritionists from the Dominican University, Loyola University Exercise students, Fitness trainers form the Loyola Wellness center and Maywood Fine arts staff; our team is looking to improve health habits and self-management of healthy individuals targeting families, in a low-middle income community.

The Research Assistant’s efforts will primarily be focused on data collection, assisting in the development of study intervention materials, recruitment and retention of participants, program daily operation, and tracking all study documentation and communication. The RA will work with other Program manager, Principal investigator and a variety of stakeholders to accomplish the aims of the projects.

Requirements 

Under general supervision, the Research Assistant I may be responsible for some or all of the following:

· Perform specific protocol procedures (specimens and data management, survey/questionnaire administration and the like) required to conduct the study and retain research subjects.

· Will participate in recruitment of participants

· Develops marketing materials for recruiting

· Assists actively in Nutrition demonstrations assisting Nutritionist.

· Assists actively in health fairs at community centers.

· Maintain study databases and project documentation with organization and accuracy.

· Maintain the security and confidentiality of all study materials and data.

· Assist team in the coordination of project-related activities.

· Conduct relevant literature searches and reviews as requested.

· Other project-related or administrative responsibilities as requested by the study team.

Qualifications

· Bachelor's degree in public health, or current student in Master Public Health. Prior experience in public health or community outreach.

· Excellent interpersonal skills, dependable, motivated and willingness to learn new tasks.

· Computer skills, including prior use of Microsoft Office products.

· Ability to relate effectively in-person, virtually and on the telephone to diverse groups of persons, community members, researchers, children and parents.

· Ability to maintain website and engage in social media (i.e. Facebook)

· Excellent organization, communication and problem-solving skills.

· Ability to work evenings and some weekends.

Assistant Director Role at UIC SPH

This position implements recruitment and yield programming for prospective students and recently admitted first-year and transfer students across undergraduate, graduate and professional programs within the School of Public Health. In partnership with the School’s Student Affairs’ administrators, prospective and admitted student yield programming will include communicating the value of a public health education in preparation for active citizenship and career development. Salary is 45-55k. This is a great growth role for someone with some recruitment/admissions experience who is ready to take the next step in their career. The listing closes July 30. As a note, while the position is listed as "visiting", it does have two years of guaranteed funding by the Vice Chancellor of Health Affairs and as long as we can show the value of the position at the school, our Dean is committed to funding it internally going forward.
