Research Hourly- Research Associate I (temporary)
The
Institute for Health Research and Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago
is conducting a multi-year project to examine the impact of public health
policies on environmental factors and diet. We are seeking to hire eight
Research Hourly-Research Associate I to collect observational data in three
locations in the continental U.S. This temporary hourly position will include a
week training and two weeks of data collection, May–June 2019. The
position will pay an hourly rate of $23.63, without benefits. There is no
guaranteed minimum number of hours per week. Research Associates will typically
work 40 hours per week and will spend a majority of time collecting data in a
variety of environments. Individuals will travel by plane and then rental car
to various locations. Paid hotel accommodations will be booked for the duration
of data collection and, in some cases, weekend stays will be required. In each
community, individuals will be required to travel by car/on foot to conduct
observational research.
In this
position you will:
- Collect
data from food stores and fast-food restaurants on product prices,
availability and marketing.
- Work
in teams of two
- Locate
food store and fast-food outlets in each community, and complete detailed
survey forms about each location;
- Work
closely under UIC supervision to collect and organize field data; and
- Participate
in regular debriefing calls and web-based and/or in-person meetings with
UIC research teams.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor
degree;
- Required
participation in paid training session May 2019 and data collection in
June 2019.
- Experience
with navigating cities and familiarity with travel around the country
- Very
strong organizational skills;
- High
attention to detail and ability to follow specific protocols;
- Strong
interpersonal communication skills, and an ability to work with others in
close environment;
- Basic
computer literacy in Word as well as the Internet;
- Must
be self-motivated and be able to work without daily supervision; and
- Must
be an energetic and enthusiastic collaborative team player.
Desired
qualifications:
- Previous
experience with national fieldwork or observational data collection; and
- Understanding
of survey research and data collection.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Under direction, serves as an Epidemiologist for the Bureau, specializing in behavioral health as applied to adolescent, young adults and as such, develops, designs and conducts highly technical planning and analytical studies of complex health surveillance, biostatistics, service administration systems and scientific research projects in the field of prevention epidemiology by use of various software such as Graphic, Geographic Systems, Spreadsheets, databases and SQL. Designs and conducts complex analysis with a special focus on substance use, addiction, mental health and risk taking behavior.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years college, a Master's Degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health or related social science research field from an accredited university plus three years professional experience in applied epidemiology, biostatistics or in a public health or a related research field. Requires knowledge of FCS's policies and procedures as related to the positive youth development, substance abuse prevention and juvenile justice and of specific youth programs such as Comprehensive Community-based Youth Services, Redeploy Illinois and Homeless Youth. Requires thorough knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office Suite Applications, graphics software, geographic information software, spreadsheet/database software and other software perform statistical analysis. Requires experience in searching mainframe-archive files and transferring files from mainframe to local computer drive. Requires thorough knowledge and experience in large scale statewide integrated management information systems, extraction of data from data systems using appropriate SQL software, database design and designing process to promote program integrity and quality. Requires ability to travel with minimal overnight stays.
Specialized Skills: Of the three years professional experience in applied epidemiology, biostatistics or in a public health or related research field, requires three years' experience in systematically analyzing client's medical, nutritional, and/or behavioral health information.

New USAID Nutrition Intern Position Posted through STAR Project
Sustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) is a
project of the Public Health Institute (PHI) supported by the US Agency for
International Development (USAID) Global Health Bureau. The Nutrition Intern
will work with USAID's Office of Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition (MCHN)
within the Global Health Bureau as well as with other nutrition teams across
the Agency and with USAID's partners, including through supporting the Agency's
new multi-sectoral nutrition activity, USAID Advancing Nutrition. This is a
Masters level position with an anticipated timeframe of 6 months.
