Fellow Sought for Diet, Weight, and/or Physical Activity Assessment


The Epidemiology and Genomics Research Program (EGRP), Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), National Cancer Institute (NCI), is recruiting qualified candidates for a Cancer Research Training Award (CRTA) with an interest in diet, weight, and/or physical activity.

The CRTA provides an outstanding opportunity for an individual with a strong interest in monitoring cancer-related risk factors in the population and improving methods of assessing those factors to gain experience working as an extramural scientist at the NCI.  The CRTA appointment is a one-year position, with an option to renew, with the Risk Factor Assessment Branch (RFAB) Learn more about RFAB at http://epi.grants.cancer.gov/rfab/.

This position provides an exciting and unique opportunity to work with leaders in the field of population monitoring and assessment of cancer risk factors, particularly diet, weight, and physical activity.  The trainee will work at the NCI, the largest Institute of the NIH, and the leader in providing research direction and funding for cancer research nationwide. The position allows contact with a large number of scientists representing disciplines of nutrition, physical activity, epidemiology, statistics, and public health, among others.

Position Description:
The trainee will function as a member of RFAB and work with RFAB staff on projects related to the Branch mission. The trainee will work collaboratively in a support role with scientific staff at the NCI and other Institutes at the NIH in the design, development and analysis of research projects. Day-to-day activities might include preparing reports; assisting with study management, development and evaluation of questionnaires/other assessment tools, maintenance of databases, analyzing data, and authoring publications; conducting literature searches; gathering and summarizing background information about scientific findings and health policy; participating in Branch meetings; and attending lectures and meetings sponsored by the NIH or other agencies.  The trainee will be supervised by Susan Krebs-Smith, Ph.D., Chief, RFAB.  It is anticipated the activities will focus primarily on the areas of diet, weight, and/or physical activity.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a master’s or doctorate degree in public health, epidemiology, nutrition, exercise science, statistics, or a related field.
  • A strong interest in public health, population-based research and cancer control. 
  • Experience conducting research or serving as a research assistant on a scientific project.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, writing, and project management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work independently in conducting self-directed research projects and on research teams.
  • Data management skills (experience with spreadsheets and statistical software packages is desirable).

Stipend and Benefits:
Salary is commensurate with experience and education.  The starting salary is approximately $34,500 for a trainee with a relevant master’s degree and $46,500 for someone with a doctorate degree.  Salary is commensurate with experience and education.  Health benefits are provided.
