City Engagement Intern, American Cities Climate Challenge - Chicago, IL


Overview
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things.   NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 500 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana and Beijing.

Position Summary:

NRDC is seeking a City Engagement Intern to work with the American Cities Climate Challenge team in our Chicago  office.  This will be a full-time paid internship for 10 weeks over Summer 2019. The American Cities Climate Challenge is an unprecedented opportunity for 25 ambitious cities to significantly deepen and accelerate their efforts to tackle climate change and promote a sustainable future for their residents.

Responsibilities

  • Support the City Engagement team of the American Cities Climate Challenge on daily requests from cities for strategic, communications, and technical assistance
  • Conduct research on a wide range of needed topics including renewables, energy efficiency, mobility, and electric vehicles, focused at the city level
  • Draft public-facing resources such as factsheets, reports, blog posts, website content
  • Draft memos and reports to staff with proposed policy recommendations

Qualifications

  • Rising senior in undergraduate; Master’s student preferred;
  • Strong background in political strategy, advocacy, and/or communications;
  • Superior research, data synthesis, and analysis skills;
  • Strong interpersonal and oral and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated interest in urban sustainability, environmental, energy, buildings, transportation; equity issues is a plus;
  • Basic competency in Excel and Google Docs.
