Overview
The Lurie Children’s Healthy Communities team is responsible for aligning the Medical Center’s clinical, research, education and advocacy expertise with its community health and outreach initiatives. This team provides oversight for the development and implementation of the Community Health Needs Assessment and Implementation Strategy and partners with leaders across the Medical Center to work towards an overall goal of advancing health equity for youth and their families across Chicago.
The Sr. Epidemiologist oversees the data analyses and reporting needs of Lurie Children’s Healthy Communities consistent with the Community Health Needs Assessment and Implementation Strategy, and provides hospital leaders and community partners reliable, digestible data related to child and adolescent health issues. They will help community partners utilize various data to advance health promotion and prevention efforts. This position is responsible for collecting, analyzing and formatting relevant information and data visualizations for various audiences, including developing and organizing for dissemination via reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, data briefs, fact sheets, presentations, media/social media, and other online platforms and written publications. This position provides support to ensure success of Healthy Communities’ annual goals and Lurie Children’s community health strategy and organizational mission to improve the health and well-being of all children and adolescents.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for (a) Community Health Needs Assessment data collection and analysis plan and (b) Implementation Strategy monitoring and evaluation plan, both in collaboration with the Director of Operations. Prepare reports on progress to share with senior leaders and the Policy, Advocacy and Community Engagement Committee of the Board of Directors.
- Collaborate with Healthy Communities’ leaders and staff to apply epidemiological methods to develop and implement effective ways to evaluate impact of Healthy Communities work.
- Provide statistical, evaluation, research and technical expertise to advance Healthy Communities’ and program partners community health initiatives.
- Identify relevant and accessible ways (i.e. papers, briefs, infographics, and mapping) to present data to meet Healthy Communities’ partner data needs. Partners include community organizations, internal and external clinicians, researchers and others.
- Prepare and track presentations, data briefs and reports, academic papers, and various other written publications essential to disseminate the work of Healthy Communities.
- Provide data and data analysis to Healthy Communities’ community and clinical partners, researchers, and other groups and individuals.
- Train students of varying levels (e.g. pediatric fellows, medical students, graduate, undergraduate) in data management and statistical analysis.
- Assume other responsibilities and job functions as assigned.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Public Health or a Social Science with concentration in epidemiology, statistics or biostatistics required, Ph.D. in a related field preferred.
- Minimum six years experience in public health statiscial analysis and evaluation required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and advanced proficiency in statistical software (e.g., SPSS, SAS, STATA), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, and Microsoft Office Suite required.
- Experience with Structured Query Language (SQL) and familiarity with Epic’s Clarity and Caboodle databases or other electronic health record databases preferred.
- Demonstrated experience and proficiency in gathering and organizing existing data from websites, data portals, and other sources.
- Strong organization and project management skills, ability to respond quickly to data requests.
- Flexibility to work on evenings and weekends.
- Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills; adept at presenting to diverse audiences of executive leaders, physicians, researchers, community partners and community members.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with individuals from different backgrounds and disciplines.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently.
