Internship Opportunity Summer 2020: Activating Neighborhood Environments for Health and Wellness

Project goals/objectives:
CLOCC works with the Chicago Park District to implement and evaluate an enhanced curriculum, which is focused on health and wellness, called CampWell. CLOCC summer interns will act as research assistance. In this role, interns will assist with data collection at parks as well as data entry at CLOCC’s office. Interns will make weekly visits to parks for evaluation and data collection. The summer intern will work to gather survey and observational data at 6 Chicago Park District day camps throughout Chicago. Data will be collected through surveys with camp counselors, junior counselors, site directors, campers, and campers’ parents. Other data collection activities include analysis of secondary data sources, observation of camp activities and camper physical activity, and objective measurement of camper physical activity. Time spent in CLOCCs office will consist of data entry and analysis.

Description of activities/function of the MPH student:
·        Follow survey and interview protocol as directed.
·        Work with park district staff to schedule data collection visits.
·        Recruit and obtain consent from participants.
·        Conduct observational data collection activities according to protocol.
·        Administration of a survey according to instructions.
·        Maintain accurate records of data collection activities including time keeping, location.
·        Manage survey data including data entry and cleaning.
·        Other duties as assigned.

June to September 2020

Qualifications/Professional Skills Required: Check one
·         Experience working with computer software, including word processing and spreadsheets.
·         Attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, experience working in an office environment, filing, copying, and developing internal systems to manage workflow is required.
·         The ability to communicate effectively through email, face to face, and through telephone interactions.   
·         Ability and willingness to travel throughout Chicago access to a car is preferred but not required.


Anticipated hours per week: (10 to 15 more if necessary)
Interns will be doing evaluation during Summer Day Camp at six Chicago Park District Parks. Camp runs from 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday. Each day will be approximately 7 hours but there is flexibility on what days are worked each week.
The offsite work has much more flexibility. Hours dedicated per week are flexible and students are also able to work from home when appropriate.

Is travel required as part of the position?
Yes to each of the parks located in North Lawndale, South Chicago, and Austin.

There may be rare travel to other community locations
