Project
goals/objectives:
This position will assist with coordination of the West Side
United (WSU) Food Pantry Initiative Work Group. West Side United is a coalition
of six hospitals (Lurie Children’s, Rush, Mt. Sinai, Cook County, Amita, and UI
Health) that are working to decrease the life expectancy gap in West Town, East
Garfield, West Garfield, Austin, Near West Side, North Lawndale, South Lawndale,
Lower West Side, and Belmont Cragin neighborhoods.
The Food Pantry Initiative Group is part of the WSU Food
Access Initiative. The Food Access Initiative has the goal of better connecting
patients, screened as food insecure to healthy food resources in their
neighborhoods. One resource for free, healthy (emergency) food is food
pantries. Each of the six hospitals have selected one pantry to support. The
hospital will offer this pantry additional help based on the pantry’s needs.
This could be financial assistance, volunteers, food donations, mental health
screenings and more.
The food pantry that Lurie Children’s Hospital is supporting
is Iglesia Evangelica Emanuel, located in Belmont Cragin.
