The Epidemiology and Genomics Research Program (EGRP), Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), National Cancer Institute (NCI), is recruiting qualified candidates for a Cancer Research Training Award (CRTA) with an interest in diet, weight, and/or physical activity.

The CRTA provides an outstanding opportunity for an individual with a strong interest in monitoring cancer-related risk factors in the population and improving methods of assessing those factors to gain experience working as an extramural scientist at the NCI.  The CRTA appointment is a one-year position, with an option to renew, with the Risk Factor Assessment Branch (RFAB) Learn more about RFAB at http://epi.grants.cancer.gov/rfab/.

This position provides an exciting and unique opportunity to work with leaders in the field of population monitoring and assessment of cancer risk factors, particularly diet, weight, and physical activity.  The trainee will work at the NCI, the largest Institute of the NIH, and the leader in providing research direction and funding for cancer research nationwide. The position allows contact with a large number of scientists representing disciplines of nutrition, physical activity, epidemiology, statistics, and public health, among others.

Position Description:
The trainee will function as a member of RFAB and work with RFAB staff on projects related to the Branch mission. The trainee will work collaboratively in a support role with scientific staff at the NCI and other Institutes at the NIH in the design, development and analysis of research projects. Day-to-day activities might include preparing reports; assisting with study management, development and evaluation of questionnaires/other assessment tools, maintenance of databases, analyzing data, and authoring publications; conducting literature searches; gathering and summarizing background information about scientific findings and health policy; participating in Branch meetings; and attending lectures and meetings sponsored by the NIH or other agencies.  The trainee will be supervised by Susan Krebs-Smith, Ph.D., Chief, RFAB.  It is anticipated the activities will focus primarily on the areas of diet, weight, and/or physical activity.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a master’s or doctorate degree in public health, epidemiology, nutrition, exercise science, statistics, or a related field.
  • A strong interest in public health, population-based research and cancer control. 
  • Experience conducting research or serving as a research assistant on a scientific project.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, writing, and project management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work independently in conducting self-directed research projects and on research teams.
  • Data management skills (experience with spreadsheets and statistical software packages is desirable).

Temporary Research Study Assistant - Northwestern

Position: Temporary Research Study Assistant

Program Description: The IMPACT Program conducts research on LGBT Health and Development (see http://www.impactprogram.org). It currently has multiple NIH- and foundation-funded studies and actively collaborates with community-based organizations to conduct research and translate findings into interventions. It is directed by Dr. Brian Mustanski and a program within the Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing at Northwestern University (http://isgmh.northwestern.edu/).

Project Description: Our online HIV prevention program, Keep It Up! (KIU!), is an interactive and engaging intervention tailored to ethnically diverse YMSM (18-29 years old) and encourages participants to “keep up” safe and healthy behaviors. Through funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, KIU! is currently being conducted as a multi-site randomized control trial (RCT) by researchers at Northwestern University in Chicago, Hunter College in New York City, and Emory University in Atlanta. A total of 901 YMSM have been enrolled into this study. Intervention outcomes are currently being assessed through follow-up assessments at 3, 6, and 12 months.

Specific Job Activities: Primary activities include: tracking participant completion of follow-up assessments; packing and tracking shipments of STI test kits for delivery to study participants; contacting participants by phone, text, and email to encourage completion of study assessments and STI test kits; managing the distribution of incentives to participants; managing monthly E-raffles; generating weekly enrollment and retention figures to track study progress; troubleshooting online survey administration problems; troubleshooting participants’ problems with self-administered STI tests; management of STI test result data from the testing laboratories; reporting positive STI results to the appropriate local health department; referring participants to care; maintaining and updating databases; maintaining accurate, timely and detailed records of study accrual and other study activities; assisting multi-site staff in retention activities; and other project-related responsibilities.

The Research Assistant (RA) is expected to work some evening hours (e.g., 11 AM – 7 PM) and weekend shifts to maximize retention efforts for study participants who are unavailable during the regular workday.

Unit Job Summary

Description of Illinois Public Health Institute

Position overview
The full‐time Program Assistant will work approximately half time to provide day‐to‐day program execution, coordination, communication, and research to support the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity (IAPO), including supporting the five standing IAPO workgroups, as well as the Healthy and Active Communities Network and ad hoc policy and project leadership committees. The Sinai Urban Health Institute (SUHI) is a research center dedicated to improving the health of Chicago’s urban communities. We are seeking a Supervisor of Program Initiatives to:
Ø implement an asthma intervention on Chicago’s Westside;
Ø train and supervise Community Health Workers, who will serve as the primary asthma educators;
Ø plan and oversee building education sessions;
Ø assist in the process evaluation of this intervention;
Ø support the Program Director with other necessary tasks.

Specific responsibilities related to the position will include: oversight of an asthma management intervention on the Westside of Chicago; developing asthma education protocols; training and supervising Community Health Workers inasthma management; mentoring and overseeing the daily activities of the Community Health Workers; monitoring the collection of process measures; planning, developing, and overseeing building education sessions on a variety of health topics; leading the project’s Community Advisory Board; working directly with staff at public housing buildings; assistance with supervising additional program asthma Community Health Workers; assisting the Program Director with funding and IRB reporting requirements and other tasks as needed.

§ Have past experience in management and supervision;

Position Description - Program Assistant
The Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI) is seeking a customer‐focused, energetic and well‐organized individual to join our team to support ongoing programs in the Center for Policy and Partnership Initiatives (CPPI) and supporting overall administrative projects and special initiatives. This position reports to the program manager in the Center for Policy and Partnership Initiatives; activities that are cross‐organizational and administrative will be implemented under the supervision of IPHI’s CEO or
managers and directors of other IPHI centers. The position is full‐time, exempt.

Description of Illinois Public Health Institute
The Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI) mobilizes stakeholders, catalyzes partnerships, and leads action to promote prevention and improve public health systems in order to maximize health, health equity and quality of life for the people of Illinois. IPHI leads initiatives through the Center for Community Capacity Development, the Center for Policy and Partnership Initiatives and the Center for Health and Information Technology. Current projects in the Centers include: promoting improved health data systems; providing training and technical assistance on community health needs assessment and accreditation and quality improvement in local health departments; conducting research on nutrition and physical activity; and convening the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity to promote policy, systems and environmental change strategies for obesity prevention.

Position overview
The full‐time Program Assistant will work approximately half time to provide day‐to‐day program execution, coordination, communication, and research to support the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity (IAPO), including supporting the five standing IAPO workgroups, as well as the Healthy and Active Communities Network and ad hoc policy and project leadership committees. Current CPPI/IAPO initiatives include the Healthy and Active Communities Network, Healthy Vending Initiative, Community Clinical Linkages State Forum and Enhancing Physical Education in Illinois. The other half of the assistant’s time will primarily be spent working on overall IPHI organizational and administrative projects, including supporting committees and logistics for a new resource development initiative and other projects associated with implementing IPHI’s new strategic plan. The assistant may be engaged in special projects within other IPHI centers as well. 

Activities may include conducting background research and drafting fact sheets, drafting reports and communications materials, organizing logistics for events, meetings and trainings; notetaking; planning staff travel; conducting outreach to support constituent participation, and assisting with social media and website development and maintenance.

Duties and responsibilities include:
 Draft and edit research reports, grant proposals, white papers, background documents, fact sheets,
newsletters, other organizing and communications materials and funder reports.
 Coordinate and support the work of advisory committees, councils, task forces, teams and research
partnerships, including scheduling meetings, communicating with participants and producing pre‐ and
post‐meeting materials.
 Coordinate with partners to plan and execute in‐person and online meetings and events by organizing
and managing logistics, developing and producing event materials, and conducting meeting follow‐up.
 Provide research assistance on evidence‐based best practices and policies, using both scholarly
literature and information from national and state policy and practice organizations; assist with research
and development of curricula, tools and other resources.
 Research, draft and compile training content and materials, including powerpoint slides, agendas,
worksheets, background and other materials.

 Participate in community/stakeholder meetings; assist with facilitation and/or notetaking of group
discussions with partners and stakeholders.
 Support IPHI’s communications and outreach through development and distribution of program
communications and marketing, through e‐marketing, social media, web content and media relations.
 Support and maintain records and information on project‐related stakeholders, participants, and other
constituents through IPHI’s constituent relationship management system; maintain other project specific
records.
 Administrative and clerical support including copying, ordering supplies, data entry, and other needs.
 Other duties and tasks as needed.
Qualifications:
 The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree in public health, public administration, public policy or
related field with a minimum of one year of work experience in program implementation, coalition
organizing, policy and/or non‐profit operations. Equivalent professional experience in a related field is acceptable.
 The successful candidate will be able to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, be able to produce in a fast‐paced environment, and be able to adapt to change and growth.
 Candidates should have experience working with diverse populations and in a variety of community settings.
 Candidates should have the ability to work independently and as part of project teams.
 Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are required; the successful candidate will be thorough and detail‐oriented.
 Strong and versatile writing skills.
 Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, and
social media is required. Experience with customer relationship management (CRM) software, and/or
web page development is desirable.

 Must have a driver’s license and ability to access a car or be qualified to rent a car.
 Must be able to sit at and operate a computer and other office machinery for a significant portion of the workday.

 The position requires occasional work on evenings or weekends. And, the program assistant must be able to travel up to 20% of time.
 The position requires frequent communication with internal and external customers about program activities. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

Intern, Tobacco Control (paid) - American Lung Association

The American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest has a great internship opportunity in our Chicago, IL Office.  As the Intern, Tobacco Control, you will plan and implement activities related to smoke-free multi-unit housing (SFMUH) initiative in suburban Cook County.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Collects data on existing SFMUH, maintains the American Lung Association’s Illinois Smoke-free Housing Directory, and responds to inquiries from residents and property owners/managers as needed;
Conducts research on lung health and tobacco policy as needed to contribute to outreach materials;
Supports the delivery of smoke-free housing education and smoking cessation services through conducting presentations, answering email and phone inquiries, sending supplies requests, and supporting the Senior Manager as needed;
Provides content for reports to Senior Manager, Tobacco Control as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  Current graduate student or rising 4th year undergraduate student in community health sciences, health policy, public health or related field required. Familiarity with Chicago and suburban Cook County. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and strong attention to detail. Ability to take initiative and work both independently and as a team member.  Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Consistent with its mission, the American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest maintains a smoke-free work place and the candidate should not use tobacco in any form.
