TITLE:  Manager, Obesity Prevention Initiatives
 REPORTS TO:  Director, Obesity Prevention Initiatives
 SUMMARY:  The Illinois Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics (ICAAP) is seeking a Manager to provide primary support for all aspects of its grant-funded childhood obesity prevention initiatives addressing clinical and community integration, quality improvement, and continuing medical education. The Manager is responsible for meeting grant objectives; developing and managing continuing medical  education (CME) and quality improvement (QI) activities; identifying continued funding sources to sustain projects and writing grants; assisting with project evaluation; maintaining a database of physical activity and nutrition programs and other resources; and supporting project marketing and communications. Additionally, the Manager conducts recruitment and outreach activities to physicians, medical clinics, and partner organizations, staffs project and ICAAP committees, provides technical assistance to physicians, and writes reports, articles, and other project-related materials. Some local travel is required.
QUALIFICATIONS:  Master’s degree in public health, or in other health-related field, is preferred and three or more years of work experience is required. The position also requires strong written communication skills and previous project and/or grants management experience with a medical or public health organization. Experience working in a community health clinic and professional writing experience is desired. Specific knowledge of care coordination and related software, quality improvement, childhood obesity, or other child health issues, is a plus. Applicants must have the ability to multi-task on several projects, proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, and familiarity or willingness to learn WordPress and learning management software.

The program’s current study is the Northwestern Juvenile Project, a large-scale, federally-funded, longitudinal investigation of mental health needs and outcomes of 1829 delinquent youth, enrolled between 1995 and 1998.

Management Synergistics, Inc., a for profit management consulting firm, is seeking an intern to assist the CEO with various health department projects. The ideal candidate will be a master’s student (PhD students preferred) with a degree in public health or related field, have experience and knowledge of HIV/AIDS planning, governance, program implementation and evaluation.

Interns for MSI will be paid $20/hour for their time and have the opportunity to work with the CEO and assist in performing a variety of daily tasks (working primarily from home), such as: traditional office work, keeping files and maintaining their organization; survey monkey development, data collection and analysis; conduct research; writing and editing reports; aiding in preparing memos or other presentation materials (i.e., PowerPoint presentations) for the CEO.

Research Specialist

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Illinois is seeking a full-time Visiting Research Specialist position. 

This position will collaborate with the PI and researchers to execute and maintain a federally-funded research project on patients with uncontrolled hypertension in the emergency department (ED).  The randomized clinical trial will assess the effect of a patient empowerment tool and a Post-Acute Care Hypertension Transition Clinic on blood pressure control for a high-risk ED population.

The Research Specialist will oversee the day-to-day elements of the project.  He/she will implement and maintain a program tracking system for participant recruitment and data collection, and manage undergraduate student research assistants.  The position will be responsible for monitoring project development on an ongoing basis and propose and implement changes as needed.  Additionally, the position will maintain IRB documentation and budgetary elements of the project.

The Department of Global Health and the UW/Fred Hutch Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) are recruiting a part-time (50% FTE) Program Operations Specialist, for the CFAR Community Action Board (CAB) Manager position.  The mission of the CAB is to develop relationships between community-based organizations (CBOs), community members, and CFAR researchers. 

This position requires a skill set that includes programmatic, grant management and fiscal administration expertise, and the ability to independently problem-solve and communicate effectively with community members, investigators, clinicians, and trainees.  All job activities need to be performed in a culturally sensitive and responsive manner when working with locally based community and AIDS service organizations, investigators, trainees, and community members.  The level of direction required for this position includes independent work with moderate oversight.  This position will entail exercising independent judgment, the use of sophisticated problem solving skills, and the ability to effectively communicate with personnel from a variety of levels within and outside the University, including local and national stakeholders.  This position will involve coordinating community activities, as well as developing, maintaining, and enhancing community partnerships with CFAR. Other activities include developing budgets, managing contract operations, and interacting in a collaborative manner with CAB co-Chairs, other CAB members, CFAR administrators, and CFAR researchers to accomplish organizational goals and objectives.  This position will play a crucial role in fulfilling the overall mission of the CFAR.  

Position Responsibilities 

Manage CFAR CAB’s collaborations with CFAR researchers and CFAR projects, including: 
  • Work directly with CFAR researchers to incorporate CAB consultations into their research projects, and draft summary critiques of CAB consultations with CFAR researchers. 
  • Develop CAB Letters of Support for CFAR research project grant applications. 
  • Liaise with CFAR Cores to develop and implement research dissemination plans to community partners. 

    Manage the CAB’s community outreach activities, including: 
  • Develop and implement a recruitment strategy for the CAB. 
  • Manage all aspects of outreach targeting CBOs, including a stakeholder survey project, an informal lunch series to present CAB and CFAR research activities, and other activities to develop relationships between CFAR and CBOs. 
  • Develop a list of community events for the CAB to support on an annual basis. 

    Plan and Execute CAB Working Group Activities, including: 
  • Plan and execute all activities related to developing and implementing CAB working groups. 
  • Liaise with CFAR researchers and CAB working group members to develop new Community Based Participatory Research projects. 
  • Draft grant proposals and prepare human subjects applications.  

    Manage the CFAR CAB’s strategic plan and reporting process, including: 
  • Manage the implementation of the strategic plan for the CAB. 
  • Direct CAB involvement in local and national CFAR events. 
  • Construct and monitor the CAB budget, including monitoring for compliance. 
  • Draft agendas for and facilitate monthly Steering Committee meetings. 
  • Update the CAB webpage. 
  • Write progress reports on CAB accomplishments and activities. 
  • Maintain data and materials related to past activities both to track progress and changes in the effective communication across disparate groups, and preserve successful methodologies and activities for future use. 
  • Other administrative duties as needed.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, social or behavioral sciences, public policy, or similar field of study; plus two years of experience working in a health-related, community engagement, or social justice environment.

    Global Epidemiology Researcher

    The Center for Disease Analysis (CDA) is a private research organization that specializes in the study of complex and poorly understood diseases. We combine epidemiologic research, advanced modeling, and decision science to develop comprehensive studies of disease burden, size and flow of populations, and the impact of future decisions. We are the leading source of epidemiology data for hepatitis C. Our work is global in nature and we have collaborated with over 50 countries so far. Our goal is to study and publish data to educate stakeholders in different countries.

    The position will entail the following activities:

    Conduct literature searches to identify available data in each country.
    Determine the quality of studies based on methodology, sample size and sample selection.
    Interview international experts to validate data and collect missing data.
    Populate and calibrate disease progression models for individual countries in Excel.
    Develop presentations that summarize key findings.
    Communicate results with leading experts via email, presentations, and conference proceedings.
    Write manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
    Limited domestic and international travel.

    This position does not involve designing or conducting observational or interventional studies.

    We are looking for a candidate with the following characteristics and background:

    MPH or PhD specializing in epidemiology with 2+ years of experience.
    Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
    Strong communication skills.
    Undergraduate degree in science – biology, chemistry, math, or physics.
    Experience in literature search – reading and summarizing scientific articles.
    Ability to write clearly, maintain accurate records and summarize results.
