Local Volunteer Opportunity - Nutrition for Kids at Quinn!

Brief description : This program is designed to explain basic nutrition and health-related topics to students first through eighth grade.  The topics we will cover include, but are not limited to, MyPlate, gardening, farm to table, food groups (allstar foods), carbohydrates, fats, protein, portion sizes, cooking basics, healthier fast food options, eating the rainbow, sugar and soda, herbs and spices, cultural foods, the food label, and physical activity. 

Population served through this program: first through eighth grade students who participate in Quinn after-school programming.

Dates and times: the class is split into two 30-minute blocks on Tuesday nights from 6:30-7:30. Latest arrival time for preparation is 6 pm on Tuesdays, earlier is preferred as needed.  Cleanup will occur after the lessons are taught, so please allot time for this as well.

Program duration (dates of semester): Programming is every Tuesday evening (January 13th- April 7th)

Number of students needed: As many as available – no clear necessary number at this time.

Time commitment:  minimum 6-8 pm Tuesday nights (more time may be required depending on lesson set up/clean up/preparation)

What does this role entail /helpful skills:
Lessons will vary, but a basic fundamental knowledge about balanced, proper nutrition is imperative.  Ability to explain complex lessons to students in a much simpler way will also be required.  We would love to have volunteers who are flexible, creative, and team players.  We are excited to bring this nutrition programming  to Quinn, and hope that the volunteers’ passion for health and wellness will show and inspire the students to make changes in their daily choices!

Flexibility will be very important.  Extra help from the medical students will be great in controlling the classroom, assisting in activities, prepping the snacks, and more.

Job Description
A Consultant who joins the healthcare analytics team (Analytic Consulting Services) provides CVS Caremark clients with insight to better understand their pharmaceutical data, and fact-based business intelligence necessary to make informed decisions on their key health care strategies.

Consultants working in CVS Caremark’s Analytic Consulting Services interact with individuals and teams that are both internal and external to the organization. The breadth of CVS Caremark services presents an opportunity to work with multiple functional areas including sales, clinical, account management, finance, underwriting, and product marketing. Sr. Epidemiologist, Healthy Communities - Lurie

Overview

The Lurie Children’s Healthy Communities team is responsible for aligning the Medical Center’s clinical, research, education and advocacy expertise with its community health and outreach initiatives. This team provides oversight for the development and implementation of the Community Health Needs Assessment and Implementation Strategy and partners with leaders across the Medical Center to work towards an overall goal of advancing health equity for youth and their families across Chicago.

The Sr. Epidemiologist oversees the data analyses and reporting needs of Lurie Children’s Healthy Communities consistent with the Community Health Needs Assessment and Implementation Strategy, and provides hospital leaders and community partners reliable, digestible data related to child and adolescent health issues. They will help community partners utilize various data to advance health promotion and prevention efforts. This position is responsible for collecting, analyzing and formatting relevant information and data visualizations for various audiences, including developing and organizing for dissemination via reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, data briefs, fact sheets, presentations, media/social media, and other online platforms and written publications. This position provides support to ensure success of Healthy Communities’ annual goals and Lurie Children’s community health strategy and organizational mission to improve the health and well-being of all children and adolescents.

Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for (a) Community Health Needs Assessment data collection and analysis plan and (b) Implementation Strategy monitoring and evaluation plan, both in collaboration with the Director of Operations. Prepare reports on progress to share with senior leaders and the Policy, Advocacy and Community Engagement Committee of the Board of Directors.
  2. Collaborate with Healthy Communities’ leaders and staff to apply epidemiological methods to develop and implement effective ways to evaluate impact of Healthy Communities work.
  3. Provide statistical, evaluation, research and technical expertise to advance Healthy Communities’ and program partners community health initiatives.
  4. Identify relevant and accessible ways (i.e. papers, briefs, infographics, and mapping) to present data to meet Healthy Communities’ partner data needs. Partners include community organizations, internal and external clinicians, researchers and others.
  5. Prepare and track presentations, data briefs and reports, academic papers, and various other written publications essential to disseminate the work of Healthy Communities.
  6. Provide data and data analysis to Healthy Communities’ community and clinical partners, researchers, and other groups and individuals.
  7. Train students of varying levels (e.g. pediatric fellows, medical students, graduate, undergraduate) in data management and statistical analysis.
  8. Assume other responsibilities and job functions as assigned.

Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in Public Health or a Social Science with concentration in epidemiology, statistics or biostatistics required, Ph.D. in a related  field preferred.
  2. Minimum six years experience in public health statiscial analysis and evaluation required.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of and advanced proficiency in statistical software (e.g., SPSS, SAS, STATA), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, and Microsoft Office Suite required.
  4. Experience with Structured Query Language (SQL) and familiarity with Epic’s Clarity and Caboodle databases or other electronic health record databases preferred.
  5. Demonstrated experience and proficiency in gathering and organizing existing data from websites, data portals, and other sources.
  6. Strong organization and project management skills, ability to respond quickly to data requests.
  7. Flexibility to work on evenings and weekends.

Fellowship assignments will be based at CDC offices in Atlanta, GA as well as offices in Morgantown WV and Spokane, WA. The fellowship positions are full-time training opportunities for one year beginning in July 2020. To qualify for this fellowship, candidates must have received their masters or doctorate degrees from an ASPPH-member, CEPH-accredited, school or program of public health within the last five years and also be U.S. citizens or permanent residents (green card status). OHIP: Summer Internship Opportunity Workplace Safety & Health Issues

Organization Description: The Occupational Health Internship Program (OHIP) is a national summer program dedicated to help students learn about the field of occupational safety and health (OSH) from those most at stake: working people. Since 2004, OHIP has played a key role in training, mentoring, and inspiring a new generation of OSH professionals to prevent job injury and disease through partnerships with worker and community-based organizations. A project of the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics (AOEC), OHIP has training sites across the country including: the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, DC, and New York City. A sample of our 2019 projects included a hazard assessment of the Las Vegas casino hotel industry, an investigation of sexual harassment and workplace violence in Los Angeles cannabis dispensaries, an assessment of job hazards and pain reported by women housekeepers in the Philadelphia hotel industry, and an investigation of violence and assaults on transit workers in Hartford, CT.

Position Description
Teams of two students are placed with a union or worker organization to investigate job-related health and safety problems among workers, often employed in an under-served or a high hazard job. Projects are designed to maximize interaction between workers and students. OHIP is an applied research experience, where students learn about the OSH field from the workers' perspective. Project work emphasizes worker interviews and worksite evaluations. At the end of the project, teams provide a "give back" product to the workers and their host union/worker organization, present their project at a national NIOSH web-conference, and produce a final report. Commitment is full-time, including possible evenings or weekends.

Qualifications
  • Graduate and undergraduate students can apply; some stipends are restricted to US citizens.
  • Non-US citizens must supply documentation of permission to work in the US.
  • Undergraduates must have completed two years, preferably in a field related to public health, environmental studies, or public policy. Graduate students in public health, medicine, nursing, or a related field are encouraged to apply.
  • Recent graduates cannot be out of school for more than six months prior to the start of OHIP (i.e. students are not eligible if they graduated prior to December of 2019).
  • Looking for students with experience or interest in working with unions or social justice organizations, are organized and self-starting, have good team skills and ideally speak a second language such as Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, etc.
  • Underrepresented minority students encouraged to apply.

Compensation
Undergraduate Students = $4,000 stipend
Graduate Students = $5,200 stipend

Public Health Institution of Metropolitan Chicago (PHIMC) is hiring a Prevention Coordinator to to coordinate HIV and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) prevention work across the state of Illinois. Specifically, this position will support two projects: coordination of the Illinois Department of Public Health’s (IDPH) Regional Implementation Group (RIG) HIV prevention grant; and coordination, outreach, and promotion for the Illinois Helpline for Opioids and Other Substances (Helpline).
