Research Assistant- Hines VA


The Center of Innovation for Complex Chronic Healthcare at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital  is a recognized Center of Excellence for Health Services Research in the VA.

Its investigators are carrying out research aimed at: enhancing the provision of patient-centered, evidence-based care;  identifying new effective models of healthcare delivery; adding value in care for patients with complex chronic care needs.
They have several ongoing and newly funded projects and are searching for a part-time research assistant.  The RA will assist with several activities including, but not limited to: coordination of meetings, data collection, IRB activities,  and literature reviews.

Position Characteristics:
As Research Associate in the AArete Research Center (AARC), you will work closely with client teams to provide an understanding of critical issues impacting clients and support the development of strategies for change. Ultimately, the Research Analysts are responsible for demonstrating in-depth industry knowledge and research skills and will be accountable for the successful execution of project support and qualitative deliverables.

Primary Responsibilities and Requirements:
  • Support healthcare (80%) and non-healthcare (20%) client teams by conducting research on and interpreting legislation, market trends and impacts, and innovation
  • Remain up-t0-date on current events in the healthcare industry and potential impacts on clients; use information to help identify prospective areas for consulting services
  • Analyze large data sets and communicate outcomes from analyses using Excel, Tableau/PowerBI, PowerPoint
  • Support thought leadership efforts using research, survey design, and interviews
  • Effectively communicate research and industry changes to client teams via presentations, executive summary, and policy analyses
  • Update weekly company-wide Industry Watch with new information such as recent consolidation, policy changes, innovations, and reports
  • Work mostly independently to own individual research requests and analysis; brainstorm and review in teams
  • Maintain project timelines and communication with client times while delivering high-quality output
  • Upload new research and intellectual property to AArete Knowledge Management Center

Qualifications:
  • BS degree required, preferably with a healthcare-related major
  • Experience within healthcare industry required, consulting background preferred
  • Ability to efficiently conduct and communicate relevant research while anticipating additional information that may support client teams
  • Ability to focus on objectivity and attention to detail while delivering high quality output
  • Ability to work independently or with teams that are diverse in terms of cultures and personalities
  • Willingness to learn and to multitask while working on projects with quick turnaround and transition times

Research Assistant II
Provides assistance as needed in Public Health Sciences to meet the goals of the current research programs. 

Clinical duties
- Maintains current Blood borne Pathogen training, training and certification for shipping with dry ice, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training updates and any training required by individual studies.
- Follows policies and procedures in accordance with clinic, university, hospital and federal guidelines.
- Maintains Technical Competencies.
- Maintains knowledge of theories and methodologies of medical science research; ability to use research processes, tools and technologies to determine the safety and effectiveness of medical products and services intended for human use.
- Recognizes ethical/compliance requirements within own area of responsibility.
- Assists in subject recruitment and visit scheduling. Obtains subject consent.
- Performs biological sample collection and processing, including spinning and aliquoting blood, storage and shipping of all specimens according to the protocol.
- Prepares and maintains subject charts and records, including lab and exam results.
- Collects subject medical histories, records vital signs, performs fingersticks, U/A dipsticks and ECGs, DXAs, interviews subjects, and records pertinent data in subject chart and/or case report forms.
- Monitors and orders lab and study supplies. Selects and applies appropriate supplies and equipment for the research study, including supplies for the international research sites.
- Maintains study samples, including the receiving of study samples from international study sites, and the shipment of study samples out of coordinating center for sample analysis
- Performs laboratory-based study sample preparation, and analysis, as needed.
- Performs other duties as required.

Data Management
- Participates in audits to assess quality assurance of study data.
- Prepares materials for reports to be written by faculty and staff on the research study.
- Responsible for the transfer of data from the international research sites
- Works with data management to assist with data processing tasks for study; enters data, verifies data, identifies problem data; performs data corrections and queries resolutions when necessary.
- Assists with project accounting activities, including verification of exams and labs performed.
- Participates in clinical research activities according to study protocols.
- Raises concerns if research conflicts with the regularity of framework or if activities deviate from protocols.
- Undertakes the accurate and complete collection of clinical data and selects appropriate forms for recording of data.
- Maintains knowledge of and ability to utilize tools, techniques and processes for gathering and reporting data in a particular department of medicine.
- Participates in projects to gather data for needs analysis.
- Assesses common problems and obstacles surrounding data-gathering.
- Detects and summarizes patterns in data and findings by producing simple reports.
- Performs other duties as required.

Overall study duties
- Provides general assistance, as needed, to the Principal Investigator and other research staff
- Provides general assistance, as needed, to the Principal Investigator to process international research site activities, and requests
- Mentors new staff under direction as needed.
- Works with other study staff to prioritize activities to meet study goals, including students. 
- Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications:
- Requires the academic knowledge of a health science related discipline and the ability to translate, adapt and apply this knowledge that is generally associated with a Master's degree or an equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience such that one can perform beginning level research in a health science field or discipline.
- A minimum of one year work experience in research is required.
- Willingness to be trained in phlebotomy and perform blood collection from participants.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and established procedures.
- Ability to work on routine job with interpersonal contact skill.
- Ability to interact with internal and external constituents.

Minimum Education/Experience:
Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, supplemented with 3-5 years of previous job-related experience.

PHI/CDC Global Health Fellowship Program

The Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) is partnering with the Public Health Institute to run the PHI/CDC Global Health Fellowship Program. This is a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-funded program that supports promising emerging global health professionals to develop the technical skills needed to respond to today’s public health challenges. Fellows have the exciting opportunity to work with leading CDC experts and contribute to public health projects around the world.

Fellows are placed in Atlanta and in CDC offices abroad where they will work on the front lines of global health and hone their professional skill. To qualify, applicants must:

·        Have an MPH or PhD in Public Health from a CEPH-accredited school or program
·        Have received their qualifying degree prior to the beginning of the fellowship or within the last five years
·        Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent residence and authorized to work in the U.S.
