Internship Opportunity Summer 2020: Emergency Food Support

Project goals/objectives:
This position will assist with coordination of the West Side United (WSU) Food Pantry Initiative Work Group. West Side United is a coalition of six hospitals (Lurie Children’s, Rush, Mt. Sinai, Cook County, Amita, and UI Health) that are working to decrease the life expectancy gap in West Town, East Garfield, West Garfield, Austin, Near West Side, North Lawndale, South Lawndale, Lower West Side, and Belmont Cragin neighborhoods.
The Food Pantry Initiative Group is part of the WSU Food Access Initiative. The Food Access Initiative has the goal of better connecting patients, screened as food insecure to healthy food resources in their neighborhoods. One resource for free, healthy (emergency) food is food pantries. Each of the six hospitals have selected one pantry to support. The hospital will offer this pantry additional help based on the pantry’s needs. This could be financial assistance, volunteers, food donations, mental health screenings and more.
The food pantry that Lurie Children’s Hospital is supporting is Iglesia Evangelica Emanuel, located in Belmont Cragin.

Description of activities/function of the MPH student:
·         Participate in monthly Food Access Initiative meetings with representatives from each Hospital
·         Participate in and lead discussions during monthly Food Pantry Initiative Work Group Meetings
·         Identify resources and pathways to connect pantry clients to nutrition education
·         Identify new channels for receiving fruit and vegetable donations
·         Identify and coordinate community resources for screenings and wraparound services
·         Assist in the development and administration of a baseline client survey
·         Assist in the development and implementation of a quarterly food pantry coordinator survey
·         Assist the Pantry with day to day operations including
o   Volunteering at the Food Pantry
o   Helping with ordering, coordination, and receiving of donated food items
o   Volunteer Recruitment
o   Assistance with updating social media

Qualifications/Professional Skills Required: Check one
·         Experience working with computer software, including word processing and spreadsheets.
·         Attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, experience working in an office environment, filing, copying, and developing internal systems to manage workflow is required.
·         The ability to communicate effectively through email, face to face, and through telephone interactions.   
·         Ability and willingness to travel throughout Chicago access to a car is preferred but not required.


Anticipated hours per week:
Mondays the pantry runs from 4 pm to 6 pm; however, there are many donation drop-offs, sorting and set up that happen during the day. Ideally a candidate would be available for most of the day to help onsite at the pantry. (Approximately 8 hrs)
The offsite work has much more flexibility. Hours dedicated per week are flexible and students are also able to work from home when appropriate.
