Local Volunteer Opportunity - Nutrition for Kids at Quinn!

Brief description : This program is designed to explain basic nutrition and health-related topics to students first through eighth grade.  The topics we will cover include, but are not limited to, MyPlate, gardening, farm to table, food groups (allstar foods), carbohydrates, fats, protein, portion sizes, cooking basics, healthier fast food options, eating the rainbow, sugar and soda, herbs and spices, cultural foods, the food label, and physical activity.

Population served through this program: first through eighth grade students who participate in Quinn after-school programming.

Dates and times: the class is split into two 30-minute blocks on Tuesday nights from 6:30-7:30. Latest arrival time for preparation is 6 pm on Tuesdays, earlier is preferred as needed.  Cleanup will occur after the lessons are taught, so please allot time for this as well.

Program duration (dates of semester): Programming is every Tuesday evening (January 13th- April 7th)

Number of students needed: As many as available – no clear necessary number at this time.

Time commitment:  minimum 6-8 pm Tuesday nights (more time may be required depending on lesson set up/clean up/preparation)

What does this role entail /helpful skills:
Lessons will vary, but a basic fundamental knowledge about balanced, proper nutrition is imperative.  Ability to explain complex lessons to students in a much simpler way will also be required.  We would love to have volunteers who are flexible, creative, and team players.  We are excited to bring this nutrition programming  to Quinn, and hope that the volunteers’ passion for health and wellness will show and inspire the students to make changes in their daily choices!

Flexibility will be very important.  Extra help from the medical students will be great in controlling the classroom, assisting in activities, prepping the snacks, and more.
